I’m Rob Tarren, a documentary wedding photographer based in Gloucestershire in the heart of the Cotswolds.

As a documentary wedding photographer, I’m there to tell the story of your wedding day, the whole day, not just a couple of hours of it. I don’t do hourly packages as it’s impossible to capture the true spirit of your day within a two or three hour time slot.

I want to record the tears of joy, tears of sadness, the stories being exchanged, the laughter and the happiness of your wedding day.

From the bride giggling with her bridesmaids whilst they’re being pampered in the morning, right through to the inevitable crazy wedding dancer busting some moves on the floor in front of the band…I’m there to capture it all.

I do not interfere with your day, I do not boss people into unnatural poses. I’m there to document you and your guests enjoying the most important day of your life in a candid and natural way.

I use natural lighting wherever possible. You’ll rarely see a flashgun perched on top of my camera unless light conditions dictate that I absolutely have to.

All of the processed shots are supplied for you to download in glorious high definition via a secure online gallery. There’s no limit to the amount of photographs you will receive; if an image forms an integral part of your wedding celebration then it appears within the story of your day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will you be with us on the day?

I don’t place any strict timescales on the day. I’m there for as long as it takes to tell the story of your wedding. I want to capture as much of the celebration as possible…without being a pest! As a rough guide, a couple of hours before the ceremony is usually plenty of time to get lots of key preparation shots. I certainly won’t disappear whilst the last few notes of the first dance are being played. I do like to stay a little while longer to photograph guests letting their hair down and capturing lots of dance floor action!

Will you ask our guests to pose all day?

The one and only time I will ask your guests to actively ‘smile at the camera’ is during the formal shots! My number one aim is to blend into the background and allow you and your guests to relax and enjoy the celebrations without the photographer interfering. If you head over to my testimonial page you’ll notice a lot of comments relating to guests not noticing me due to my candid approach to the day!

Do you photograph the formal group shots?

I do, but as anybody who attends a wedding will testify, it’s generally the part of the day everyone dreads and has a nasty habit of ruining the atmosphere of a wedding! I recommend keeping the number of formal group shots to an absolute minimum (preferably in single figures) to ensure you spend more time enjoying your day with your guests. In order to speed up the process, I would ask the bride and groom to nominate an usher to gather the required groups together.

How long have you been doing this?

At the time of writing, I’ve been a full time photographer for 13 years.  I’ve photographed over 550 weddings in all seasons, in all weather conditions.  For me personally, I believe it’s one of the most rewarding jobs one can imagine!  I’m very fortunate to be someone who simply cannot wait to get to work and enjoy spending the day with a room full of excited people who beam from ear to ear!

Also, in my years as a professional photographer I’ve covered everything from product imagery to sporting events, newborn photos to corporate headshots.

What is a pre-wedding shoot?

A pre-wedding (or engagement) shoot is an opportunity to get together before your big day to have some fun, take some shots and get you used to the camera. It’s completely optional but it gives you the chance to see how your images will look with my style of photography. The only restriction I make is that the pre-wedding shoot must take place in Gloucestershire. Read about pre-wedding shoots in my blog by clicking here.

How many photos will I receive?

There’s no set number as it’s difficult to provide an exact quantity of shots as this varies depending on a number of factors. For example, the length of bridal prep, the number of locations (the more time I’m in a car driving between venues, the less time I’m shooting), weather/seasonal conditions, etc. I will always aim to deliver in excess of 400 fully processed photos of your day.

It’s great that you give us the digital images; but can you also provide prints?

All of your processed images are placed into an online password protected gallery where you can order prints, canvases and framed images at the click of a mouse button. All orders are fulfilled by one of the UK’s leading processing labs and delivered directly to your door. Share your gallery with friends and family and they can order photos too.

I would like an album, what will I have to do?

Once you have had an opportunity to review the photos, I will ask you to select around seventy of your favourite images and I will build a bespoke layout and send you a set of proofs showing you how the pages of the album will appear. Once you are happy with the layout I will arrange for the album to be created.

Do you have a drone?

Yes! I hold a PfCO (Permission for Commercial Operation) which in general speak is the ability to legally fly a drone for commercial purposes.  This a very important document supplied by the Civil Aviation Authority to UAV pilots who have completed the relevant training and flight assessments.  Where possible, I will provide drone photography at your wedding if SAFE and LEGAL to do so.

Are there any hidden extras?

No, the price quoted above is the price you will pay for wedding ceremonies in Gloucestershire and the neighbouring counties. Accommodation and travel costs would apply for ceremonies that are outside of these areas.

What happens if you are ill?

In the extremely unlikely event I am unable to attend on the day, I am part of a group of professional photographers providing backup for each other should the need arise.  I haven’t missed any of the 550+ weddings I have been booked to attend due to illness.

Do you offer discounts for cash?

As a full time professional photographer I offer a service that has been financially calculated to cover the time and energy dedicated to your special day. Wedding photography is so much more than collecting ‘snaps’ from one day. Many of my weddings are booked a year to eighteen months in advance, so the knowledge that I will still legally be operating at the time of your wedding is vital. I operate as a private limited company bound by the tax and company laws of the UK. Yes you may pay cash, although it will still be accounted for by my company in the manner you would expect as a tax payer yourself.

Do you use a second photographer?

I much prefer to work alone as it allows me to take sole responsibility for the brief you have supplied me with. I will not use your wedding as a training ground for assistant photographers. I work in a discreet manner which allows your guests to relax and enjoy your day; something that would be difficult to achieve if they felt they are being ‘papped’ from all angles by multiple photographers.

Will you blog our wedding?

Very likely! I’m aware couples love having their images shown off on my site! It’s also the most honest way to display my style of photography and googling one of my weddings is probably the reason you found my website! However, I do appreciate that some couples would prefer to keep their images private; with this in mind I would not blog anything if you expressly ask me not to. No photos will be blogged until I have sent your gallery.

Everything sounds great! How do I book you?

As soon as you are happy to proceed, a non refundable booking fee of £200 will secure my services for the day. The balance will need to be paid a couple of weeks before the wedding day.

When should we book?

It sounds like a cheesy sales tactic, but with anything wedding related it is always best to book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. To put it into context, I regularly shoot over 50 weddings each year and sadly have to decline more than triple that figure as I haven’t figured out how to clone myself yet!

2022 was a rather exceptional year with the hangover from COVID postponements, I photographed a total 67 weddings!  At the time of writing (September 2024) I am fully booked with 55 weddings booked in for 2024 and currently have 45 weddings to look forward to in 2025!

Do you have more questions?  I have even more FAQ’s on my blog page that can be found here.  No two weddings are the same so if you do have any queries that are not answered on my website then please drop me a line via my contact page, it would be great to hear from you!
